A small team, and a much bigger one

Though our core team is only a handful of people, hundreds have already contributed to Hundipea in one way or another.

Thankfully, we don't have to know everything

We’re working with researchers at Tallinn University of Technology to figure out how old buildings can be reused, and UK-based Nature Metrics is using eDNA samples to find out which species live at Hundipea. The Center of Anthropology looked into what people in the surrounding neighbourhoods value about the area, what they expect from the changes and what they’re afraid of. Architecture firm Pluss Arhitektid has been our planning partner for years and helped build Hundipea’s digital twin. These are just a few examples. If you’d like to know more, have a read of our blog.

Who else is involved?

Hundipea’s first tenants are already giving the place its character, whether it’s running Tallinn’s cosiest neighbourhood restaurant, making sculptures about environmental problems, organising events that bring many people here for the first time, mowing the district’s first park by hand so more species can live there, or working out how to brew beer with the smallest footprint possible. Neighbours play their part too. They come to volunteer days, grow things in the urban garden and let us know what they think about the area’s future.

And then there are the landowners and the supervisory board. The owners of the Paljassaare harbour area have come together in a single company so that 42 hectares can be planned as a district rather than separate “seaside apartment blocks”. Their representatives on the supervisory board look after the landowners’ shared interests, guide the company’s work and keep the development on track. They’ve been at it for almost 20 years – roughly as long as the first detailed plan has been working its way through the city’s approval process.

Hundipea also includes Paljassaare Harbour and HP Infra, the company that runs the harbour area’s infrastructure. You can read more about both on their websites.

Hundipea is coming to life, and there are plenty of ways to be part of it.
